Gliding club open day

Omarama is to celebrate the start of the new gliding season with an open day at its airfield on October 1.

The Omarama Soaring Centre is regarded as one of the top gliding venues, having hosted the world gliding championships, and attracts pilots from around the world.

The open day for the new soaring centre will feature an afternoon of aircraft displays, radio-controlled model aircraft, glider handling and aerobatics.

Special gliding flights are being offered and the day will conclude with a wine and cheese party in the terminal building with guest speakers, an auction, raffles and prizes.

All proceeds will benefit Youth Glide Omarama, which offers gliding experiences, glider training and scholarships for young people aged between 13 and 18 years.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
