That dysfunctional American family, the Simpsons, have made a holiday appearance in Kurow and locals are hoping they fare better than the minions from the film Despicable Me last year.

Yesterday, English tourist Grant Atkinson-Smith, from London, stopped to photograph the Simpson family, the characters painted by Janina Slee and volunteers on the bales this year.

Every December for more than 40 years, giant hay bales have been moved to the intersection of State Highways 82 and 83 and painted.

Many visitors passing through have stopped for photographs.

Initially, it was a family, but in recent years with the help of Mrs Slee's artistic abilities, they have evolved into television and film characters.

Last year's Despicable Me minions were popular with children, but were destroyed in a suspicious fire on January 8.

The Kurow brigade was called out at 3am, and spent two hours extinguishing flames, but was called back at 7.45am, after the flames reignited.

That left the town upset and angry, but it has bounced back with this year's new family.
