In honour of all the people he has lost to cancer, including his father-in-law, and inspired by a friend who entered The Longest Day golf challenge, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge has been playing golf to raise money for a good cause.

Sgt Woodbridge played four rounds of golf, 72 holes, at the Waitoa Park Golf Club in one day earlier this month to raise funds for the Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.

Sgt Woodbridge’s father-in-law died of cancer nine years ago, and raising money for cancer is a cause close to his heart.

"I’ve lost my aunty and my sister-in-law . . . three friends at work, over the last five years."

He has four "good mates" who are "battling it now".

It is a disease "that you think, ‘when is it my turn?"’

About 70 people a day are diagnosed with cancer in New Zealand.

Sgt Woodbridge said he loved golf and was a "bit of an addict" which motivated him to choose the sport for his fundraiser.

"We are losing them[cancer sufferers] all the time. If I can get out and do something I love for something we should all hate, it’s worth a bit of pain," he said.

He was pleased with the support he received for his efforts which began at 6.15am.

He set out to reach a target of $500, and ended up getting $2500.

"It’s humbling.

"I’ve had a lot of people get in behind me to raise awareness of what cancer does and how it affects people".
