Lower Thames St toilets get reprieve

The Waitaki District Council has decided not to demolish the toilets in lower Thames St.

They are the only toilets in lower Thames St that are open 24-hours a day. The closest 24-hour toilets are in Severn St, at the rear of the opera house.

In its first consideration of next year's budget, the council decided to close the toilets.

On Tuesday, at the second budget round, it reversed that decision.

Councillors agreed the toilets should not be closed when there were no others in the area that were open all day - those across the road, behind the I-Site information centre, close at 9pm.

The council is reviewing its public toilets strategy, prepared about 10 years ago, and it believed any decision on toilets should wait for the outcome of that review.
