A commemorative display of 288 knitted poppies of all shapes, sizes and shades of red will feature in Oamaru's Anzac Day celebrations next week.

In August, the North Otago Federation of Women's Institutes was given a pattern for knitted and crocheted poppies.

Initially, they were asked to send their knitted poppies to Queenstown.

''I said 'no, if we're going to do these, we're going to support the local area','' North Otago Federation of Women's Institute president Noeline Bowman said.

''So we decided we would do them for North Otago.''

June Pawley, also of the North Otago Federation of Women's Institute, Margaret Brooker and Carole Gould, of the Care and Craft group, and Dot Waller also became involved in the project.

Collectively, they knitted 288 poppies, which have been made into a display board by Helen Strachan.

The collection of knitted poppies marking the commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of World War 1 will be on display at various locations in Oamaru on Anzac Day.

''It looks lovely - it's just all come together beautifully,'' Mrs Bowman said.
