Rain but no flooding

North Otago was largely left unscathed after more rain fell on the South Island’s saturated east coast yesterday, and the Waitaki District Council’s clean-up went ahead unhampered, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said.

According to MetService, just 8.6mm fell in Oamaru yesterday and the majority of the predicted rain fell north of the Waitaki River.

The NZ Transport Agency reported State Highway 82, Kurow to Waimate, was affected by surface water north of the Waitaki River and State Highway 1, from Glenavy to Timaru, was under a caution for a period, but only State Highway 83, from Georgetown to Black Point, experienced flooding in the district.

Only 14 Waitaki District Council roads were listed as closed on the council’s website last night.

On Monday, 36 roads were listed as closed in the district.

Mr Kircher said 15 crews were on council roads yesterday continuing  the clean-up.
