Schedule busy for annual meeting

After two years of planning, Oamaru will host 97 railway enthusiasts and their partners for the Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand's annual conference this weekend.

For Harry Andrew, who first became involved with the federation through Oamaru Steam and Rail in 1988, it is the culmination of eight years of effort to get the conference to Oamaru.

That was achieved two years ago at Shantytown on the West Coast when Oamaru won the right to stage the conference in the South Island this year. It alternates between the two islands each year.

Mr Andrew expected about 70 people for the conference, so was pleased when almost 100 booked.

The federation represents about 70 heritage and tourist rail organisations throughout New Zealand.

Most of the enthusiasts started arriving yesterday afternoon, staying at the Kingsgate Hotel Brydone with the conference at the Oamaru Opera House.

After registrations last night, they attended the Oamaru on Fire celebrations in Harbour St.

The major part of the conference starts this morning with a welcome by Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton, meetings and workshops.

Those not involved in workshops or discussion groups have an optional tour of Oamaru's rail history.

Tonight is free for visitors to visit Oamaru attractions or attend the Steampunk activities in the historic area.

Tomorrow, the federation's annual meeting will be held, followed by further workshops and discussion groups.

In the afternoon, there will be a visit to Oamaru Steam and Rail and a ride on the newly-restored 1924 Hudswell Clarke B10 train, followed by the formal awards dinner at night.
