St Kevin’s College earned early bragging rights in a secondary school showdown to open the netball season.
They beat cross-town rivals Waitaki Girls’ High School Wildfire 47-43 in the opening round of the North Otago Netball premier A competition last weekend.
It was a tight contest from the outset with the score deadlocked after the first quarter.
St Kevin’s then pulled ahead slightly by four points at halftime but Waitaki Girls’ came out hot and won the third quarter making it a one point game heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The college players were able to hold their nerve and get the four-point win.
The newest addition to the premier A grade, Valley Kaha, was given a tough task first up as they were dispatched by defending champions Valley Manawa 57-20.
Dominant first and third quarters powered Manawa to the win.
In the other matches, Valley Ahi scored a whopping 79 points to handily beat Twizel by 47 points and Maheno also cruised to a big win over Athletic, 56-35.
This weekend’s matches will be played indoors at the new Network Waitaki Event Centre.
Valley Ahi, Kaha and Manawa will take on Waitaki Girls’, Athletic and Twizel, respectively, while Maheno play St Kevin’s.
