The establishment of a special committee by Environment Canterbury (ECan) to manage water resources in the lower Waitaki catchment and the Waimate district will be discussed at two public meetings next week.
Details about setting up a lower Waitaki-south coastal-Canterbury zone committee under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy will be outlined.
Nominations are already being called for the committee, one of eight ECan proposes throughout the Canterbury region - which also includes part of North Otago - under its innovative water management plan.
It will be a joint committee of ECan, the Waimate and Waitaki district councils and have up to nine members, including district and regional council, Ngai Tahu and community representatives.
This week, ECan appointed commissioner Peter Skelton to the committee.
The former Environment Court judge chaired a hearings panel which considered water resource consent applications for the lower Waitaki River.
People interested in applying to join the committee are being encouraged to attend one of next week's meetings.
The deadline for applications is August 13.
The meetings will be held in the Kurow Hall on August 4 and the Opera House in Oamaru on August 5.
