While Furiosa may not be setting the box office on fire, the Mad Max aesthetic was alive and well in Oamaru over the weekend.

The annual Steampunk NZ Festival drew people from all over the South Island to enjoy the fun and show off their best home-made costumes.

It was always a crowd pleaser and this year was no different, one of the organisers, Lea Campbell, said.

She had loved seeing the vast range of attendees, from first-timers to out-of-town visitors and people who attended steampunk festivals across the globe.

"They go regularly to overseas ones and they’ve come here."

An addition this year was the festival hub in the Cycle Journeys building in Harbour St.

"A place where people come sit and have a coffee, meet up with other people and get information.

"The festival hub was a ripping success."

The grand parade was not limited to humans.

This year’s theme — "Botanical Mechanical" — had been a hit as well.

She had been blown away by the number of people at events.

"We did wonder, in these economic times, whether people would still come to the same extent. But we still sold out of all of our events; we still had heaps of people in the parade."

About 600 people attended the opening night on Friday, she said.

The festival wraps up today with the SteamPINK Breakfast, a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
