Swimming coach to go

Competitive swimmers in Oamaru will have to wait to see if they will be left without a head coach, following the resignation of a well-respected mentor.

After 12 years as Waitaki Aquatic Centre head coach, Shane Jones will leave his post at the end of the month for a new role in Ashburton.

Waitaki District Council recreation manager Eric Van der Spek said a temporary coach would be brought in to cover the position for the next month but a decision on whether a fulltime replacement would be appointed had not yet been made.

''We will be looking at that, along with the swim club ... and we will make a decision in due course.''

The council did not pay a salary for the position. It was funded by instruction fees from the Oamaru Swim Club, and through swimming classes at the aquatic centre, he said.
