Three fires investigated by police

Police are investigating a series of fires in Oamaru on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said between 12.15am and 8.46pm on Sunday, three suspicious fires were reported to police.

The first suspected arson was a letterbox fire on Wansbeck St about 12.15am on Sunday.

''[The] offender has lit built-up junk mail and the fire has spread to a nearby small tree,'' the spokeswoman said.

The Fire Service was called to 49 Wansbeck St to prevent the fire from spreading.

No-one was home at the time.

The next callout was later that night when, sometime before 8pm, two rubbish bins at St Kevin's College were set on fire.

In the third incident, two high density road cones were found ablaze on Tamar St, at 8.46pm on Sunday.

All three fires were put out quickly.

At 10pm on Saturday night, a letterbox was stolen from Devil's Bridge Rd. It was discovered on Taward St at midnight.

A police spokeswoman said it had been thrown at a moving vehicle on Taward St, but hit a parked car. There was minor damage to the car.

Anyone with information on any of the incidents should contact Oamaru police on 03 433-1400 or report it anonymously to the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555-111.
