Waitaki District Council contractors remove a 100-year-old Memorial Oak in Severn St yesterday.
The tree was planted to commemorate the sacrifice of Private E. H. Guthrie in World War 1.
It was removed for safety reasons.
The council said in a statement it had been monitoring a crack in the tree’s trunk over the past eight months.
The council said it "has no choice but to remove the tree" and would plant a replacement oak tree this winter.
