Truck speed campaign follows deaths

Truck drivers in North Otago need to watch their speed, with police conducting a two-week campaign.

The heavy motor vehicle speed operation, in conjunction with the Southern District highway patrol and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit, comes after two fatal crashes in the Waitaki district this year involving trucks.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy said the operation would involve highway patrol officers, boosted by police out patrolling when they were not needed for other tasks.

They will be watching for trucks exceeding their speed limit of 90kmh, but drivers of other vehicles have also been warned to take care because of the extra patrols.

The campaign started on Thursday.
