On Monday night, their stocks were replenished, and some, thanks to the ''incredible'' generosity of the community during the annual Toot for Tucker appeal.
Sirens reverberated around Oamaru and surrounding areas on Monday night, signalling the delivery of donations of non-perishable foods for disadvantaged North Otago families.
About 40 vehicles, including two fire engines, three St John ambulances and five police cars, canvassed the streets of Oamaru and surrounding districts.
Runners greeted and thanked donors. Food bank secretary Archdeacon Bernard Wilkinson said the evening had demonstrated the incredible generosity of the community.
''It's growing every year. I think there's more in this year than there has been before,'' he said.
''These stocks will last us virtually through the year.''
All the donated goods were taken to the Oamaru foodbank, where they are being sorted and stored for assistance to families in need.
The event was organised and promoted by the Lions Club, and was supported by Police, St John, the Fire Service, Scouts, the Air Training Corps, and St John Youth.
