A review of waste services in the Ahuriri area of the Waitaki Valley to examine issues concerning rubbish disposal is being undertaken by the Waitaki District Council.

Its assets group manager, Neil Jorgensen, said issues had been raised in recent years over the solid waste services, mostly relating to recycling, transfer station hours and illegal dumping and littering.

More recently, that included dumping green waste in the Otematata wetlands reserve and other rubbish around the township, with the council urging people to photograph and report offenders.

Mr Jorgensen said in response to some of the concerns, transfer stations in Omarama, Otematata and Kurow would be open longer hours during the busier summer months.

Wheelie rubbish bins were provided in Omarama until early February to cope with additional waste from tourists and holiday-makers.

The review of waste services was to get a clearer understanding of what the issues were and how services compared with other areas in the district.

''This will help us determine how those services can be best delivered in the future,'' he said.

The review would begin with a workshop with the Ahuriri Community Board early next year, followed by consultation with the community.
