Four Australian climbers were rescued from a peak in Mt Aspiring National Park yesterday morning after getting into difficulty.

Wanaka police response manager Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said police were advised at 9.20am the climbing group was stranded on Mt French - which is on the southern side of Bonar Glacier - on an area known as the Quarterdeck.

The three men and one woman, aged in their late 20s and early 30s, were unable to descend because of dangerous conditions on the mountain and deteriorating weather conditions.

Two members of LandSAR Wanaka's alpine cliff rescue team were flown to the site by Aspiring Helicopters to retrieve the climbers, who were then brought back to Wanaka.

One climber had a dislocated finger and was treated at Wanaka's medical centre, but the others were uninjured.

Constable Mike Thomas said the group had originally planned to return from their climbing trip on Saturday.

They had been well-equipped and had a personal locator beacon, which they used to raise the alarm, and a satellite phone, which was used to communicate directly with their rescuers.
