Fifty horses, 10 races, zero injuries and a 3000-strong crowd.

Those were the key numbers at another successful Glenorchy Races on Saturday.

The township at the head of Lake Wakatipu laid on a hot, cloudless day for the 53rd edition of its annual race meeting, drawing punters from Invercargill to Christchurch.

Organiser Bruce Douglas said many first-timers at the event were ''amazed'' by the amateur riders and variety of races.

Despite a few falls, no riders were injured.

''It's probably the least work St John has had for years.''

The crowd was also well-behaved: ''It was a very good crowd, there were no problems, and we had the band going until midnight afterwards.''

All funds raised from the $10 entry charge went back into the community, he said.

About two-thirds of the horses entered in the races were local and many of those were drawn from the township's two horse trekking companies.
