The Southern Lakes Festival of Colour will be launched on the Wanaka lakefront this morning, alongside a series of billboard paintings which have captured the public's interest as they took shape during the past few days.

Artists Richard Adams and Hayley King, of Auckland, Tai Kerekere, of Wellington, and Priscilla Cowie, of Kaiapoi, began painting the billboards last Thursday.

Sited prominently between the lake and Ardmore St, the oversized artworks have attracted much attention.

''There has been a good level of interest ... and we've already received some discreet inquiries from potential buyers,'' festival director Philip Tremewan said.

The paintings have a ''pouwhenua'' theme - markers that tell something of people and place - and are a regular feature of the festival programme. Other work from the billboard artists is on display at a new exhibition called ''Festival'', at Wanaka's Gallery 33.

The festival features performances in Wanaka, Queenstown, Hawea, Luggate and Cromwell, and finishes this Sunday.lucy.ibbotson@odt.co.nz
