Boat's journey nearly over

A 60-tonne, 24m-long boat, Pacific Jemm, is expected to begin its journey to Queenstown today on the back of an 88-wheeled trailer.

However, getting the boat this far has been far from simple.

The vessel, which will probably arrive in Kingston on Monday and be launched on Lake Wakatipu before docking at O'Reagans Wharf, was transported on a 60m container ship to Bluff and was to have been lifted on to the trailer on Tuesday night.

However, the container ship arrived late and strong winds, which caused the ship to break its moorings on Tuesday night, continued on Wednesday morning.

Consulting engineer Bob Oldham said the boat could not be lifted from the water if winds were more than 20 knots, which meant another delay before the boat could begin its journey to Kingston.

"The logistics of it are quite significant, actually.

"We have got it on a trailer - there are 11 rows of wheels, each row has eight wheels, so that's 88 wheels - with a tractor unit on both ends of the trailer."

Mr Oldham said once the boat was loaded transporting it was relatively simple. However, due to its height, power lines between Bluff and Kingston had to be dropped along the way.

A temporary slipway had been constructed in Kingston and would be used to launch the boat on Lake Wakatipu.

Pacific Jemm, which was built in Italy, is owned by Mike Mahoney, of Wellington.
