Cannabis pipe found in tourist's luggage

A Canadian tourist has copped a lucky break after she was caught with a cannabis pipe at Queenstown Airport.

Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, said the 25-year-old woman was fortunate the pipe, which was in a sealed bag, was discovered while her bag was being screened as she was checking in for a flight to Bali on Friday morning.

Sgt Newell said the consequences would have been much worse for the woman if the pipe had been found in Bali.

• On Friday night, police were carrying out a bail check at a house in Fernhill, Queenstown, when a bag of cannabis was seen through a window.

A search of the house uncovered 43.9g of cannabis in bags and cannabis equipment.

As a result, a 19-year-old Queenstown man was arrested and remanded in custody.

• On Sunday afternoon, police carried out breath-alcohol checks at the bottom of the Coronet Peak access road after receiving reports of excessive drinking at the ski area during the day.

Senior Constable Chris Blackford, of Queenstown, said that of the 115 cars stopped, three drivers tested positive for alcohol but were not over the legal limit.

Most of the drivers stopped commented to police that breath-testing drivers leaving the ski area was a good idea, he said.
