Council regulatory manager Lee Webster said a more proactive approach would be taken this year, with the guides focusing more on education and awareness of the rules on alcohol, litter, fires and freedom camping.
"We want people to have a good time and enjoy the beach and everything our district has to offer, but we want them to be aware and respect our rules.''
The guides, wearing branded high-vis vests, would walk the waterfronts in Queenstown and Wanaka, talking to people and helping raise awareness, from 7pm-10pm until Boxing Day, then 6pm-10pm until January 5.
An alcohol ban after 10pm came into force yesterday, applying to downtown Queenstown, Arrowtown and Wanaka, Frankton Beach and Lake Hawea.
That ban is in place until December 26.
A 24-hour alcohol ban will take effect on December 27 until January 5.
