Concerns raised at teacher issues

More than 80 people, most of them parents, attended a meeting held at Wakatipu High School last night, to voice concerns about a staffing problem that came to a head in the past week.

The meeting follows the removal of principal Lyn Cooper last Wednesday by external employment lawyer Peter MacDonald, of Christchurch.

He was engaged to sort out issues among senior staff after a damning report by the Education Review Office (ERO) revealed dysfunctionality between certain staff.

Mrs Cooper and Mr MacDonald could not reach an agreement during the month he had been working on the school's issues and Mrs Cooper was asked to leave.

Deputy principal Grant Adolph was appointed interim acting principal while the board looks for a replacement.

Last week Mr MacDonald sent a "reorganisational proposal" to staff and the board of trustees to look at changing the structure of the senior management team.

Mr Adolph said he was pleased to see such a large turnout of parents as he advocated having open discussion.

Mr Adolph said the meeting was about "reassuring the community we've got a professional staff wanting to move forward".

Parents were given the opportunity to address Mr MacDonald, members of the the board and staff members during the two-hour meeting.

"Parents were seeking reassurance learning for their children was not being compromised," Mr Adolph said.
