Members of Mount Aspiring College band the Wolfmen were feeling the pressure ahead of the Central Otago Smokefreerockquest regional final at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Saturday night.

The college has a long history of success at the event, and the Wolfmen members Conor Rutherford (lead guitar), Jack Reaney (drums), Eugene Wolfin (vocals), and Elliot Steven (bass and back-up vocals) continued that winning streak when they were judged the best band.

"There was a lot of pressure on us to win it," Conor said, as he and his band mates celebrated their success.

"I had doubts about us getting first place because some of those bands were really on to it," Elliot added.

"We were a bit nervous about not pulling it off for the fourth year [for the college] in a row."

The boys had even more of a tradition to uphold than they thought.

While they were right about Mount Aspiring College band Colour Classic winning the event for the past three years, the school had also produced winning acts in the four years before that.

The Wolfmen's win was its eighth consecutive regional Rockquest victory.

The young musicians, who describe their sound as rock with elements of funk, named their band earlier this year when two members had beards.

They stuck with the name despite the three year 12 and one year 13 pupil now being clean shaven.

Lead vocalist Eugene fell to his knees on stage when his band was announced the winner.

"I was so happy. I've been in Rockquest a few times and this is my last year in school so I just really wanted this."

They, along with second-place band the Fletchers, of Wakatipu High School, will now compete for one of eight spots in this year's Smokefreerockquest national final at Claudelands in Hamilton on September 22.

National finalists will be selected from a pool of music DVDs, produced by first-place and second-place-getters from each of the 24 regional finals, and bands from the Rockshop Second Chance category.

Other awards on Saturday were: the Alpine Effect, Wakatipu High School (3rd); the Apra Lyric Award and Lowdown Best Song, Adventure Time, Wakatipu High School; the Mainz Musicianship Award, Adam Hardy, guitarist and vocalist for the Alpine Effect, Wakatipu High School; Smokefree Award For Women's Musicianship, Laura Winstanley for Feeding Dave, Cromwell College; People's Choice, Oddity, Mount Aspiring College.
