Queenstown police are investigating the cause of a crash on State Highway 6, near Arrowtown, yesterday, which sent a courier to Lakes District Hospital with leg injuries.

Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said the incident happened about 11.50am as the Azap Couriers van was heading along State Highway 6 towards Queenstown. Just past the Morven Ferry Rd turn-off, on a 75kmh corner, the driver appeared to have lost control.

"The vehicle has crossed the centre line, careening or losing control, hitting the bank on the opposite side of the road. [The van] has flipped on to its side and come to rest."

No other vehicles were involved, Sgt Watt said.

The driver's leg was caught "between the vehicle and the road", he said.

The man was trapped in the vehicle for about an hour, while volunteer fire crews from Arrowtown and Queenstown worked to free him.

St John Queenstown operations team manager Alana Reid told the Otago Daily Times yesterday the driver of the van, a 27-year-old Dunedin man, was taken to Lakes District Hospital with "moderate leg crush injuries".

He was still at the Frankton hospital yesterday afternoon but it was possible he would be transferred to another hospital.

Sgt Watt said he was unsure if charges would be laid in relation to the incident.
