Discussion of open spaces on the agenda

Landscape protection will be high on the Queenstown Lakes District Council's strategy committee agenda tomorrow.

A series of monitoring reports have been undertaken to provide input to the council's district plan and part of the report has included an "open space" section covering landscape protection in the area.

"Overall, monitoring has found the majority of the objectives and policies for the open space zone, landscape protection, to be effective," senior policy analyst Blair Devlin, who prepared the report, said.

"However, the rules and assessment matters could be refined in a number of areas to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of district plan provisions."

The report said the purpose of an open space zone was to protect landscapes, natural character and informal open areas.

The intention of section 20 of the district plan, landscape protection, was to keep these areas in a natural state and "free of buildings and structures".

The report said there was no way of assessing how efficiently the "zone" had delivered on consents compared with other zones.
