Flood protection could be built earlier by ORC

Flood protection to be built for the $42 million Project Shotover wastewater and sewerage facility could be done earlier than thought.

Subject to funding approval, the work could be done in conjunction with construction of the Otago Regional Council's river training line.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council's infrastructure services committee yesterday approved a submission to the draft 2011-12 annual plan for $676,000 towards protection works to be carried out by the ORC.

The money would go towards a 720m revetment line structure, which would be designed, built and maintained by the ORC, in addition to the construction of a wholly ORC-funded river training line.

Revetment lines are designed to prevent erosion of the land behind the line, and in this case, to minimise risk of pollution entering the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers during flooding.

QLDC strategic project manager Martin O'Malley said the figure included a contingency on the $520,000 cost summarised by the ORC, because staff were sceptical the works could be realised for this sum, based on previous estimates and other factors.

In response to concerns from Cr Trevor Tattersfield about bringing works forward, Mr O'Malley said the matter was solely about taking advantage of concurrent construction.

"By having the revetment in there, it does not mean that we have to speed up Project Shotover. It's just protecting the area for when we need it."
