'Fracas' at school show

Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men did not sink in with two Queenstown fathers when they had to be pulled apart by police when fighting outside a Christmas show at Queenstown Primary School.

Senior Constable Chris Blackford, of Queenstown, said yesterday it appeared one parent took exception to the behaviour of another parent on the school premises on Thursday evening.

''When they spoke outside of the hall, where the children's Christmas show was, tempers flared and a fracas ensued,'' he said.

A ''shoulder barge'' was understood to have been involved in the scuffle. Police attended the scene, split up the combatants and dealt with them by way of a warning.

Board of trustees chairman Noel Saxon said yesterday it was ''an unfortunate event'' which the school did not want occurring on the premises.

A senior staff member moved the men off the school property before police arrived. Calling the police was the right move, he said.

''We have all members of the community come along to see the show and the show is a celebration of Christmas, so this is not really in the Christmas spirit.''
