The Southern Lakes Lesbian and Gay Society (SLLAGS) was created late last year because of concerns by a group of friends that there were no activities or venues in Queenstown or Wanaka for gay, lesbian or bisexual people.
Co-founder Sally Whitewoods, of Queenstown, said after a few drinks the name was chosen.
About 40 people have registered to attend the group's first meeting tomorrow night.
"It's more just catching up with like-minded people to see them every now and then.
"It's almost as if there are no people in town that are gay, lesbian, bi, or even curious ... being a tourist town, how is there not even a local [gay] bar?"
Mrs Whitewoods hoped to eventually organise a mardi gras-style party which all of Queenstown could enjoy.
"I'd love for it to become bigger and do something like that where the town is involved ... something that's fun for everyone to go to."
