A French restaurant is adding music to its menu to become the only regular jazz and blues venue in Queenstown.

Les Alpes hosts Queenstown duo Impulse, also known as vocalist Melita Gizilis and pianist-vocalist Anna-Maree Morris, who will serenade diners enjoying the Church St restaurant's "Tour de France" menu tonight and Saturday night.

Impulse formed when Miss Gizilis, a Department of Conservation Wakatipu services ranger, was looking for someone to play jazz keyboards three months ago.

Miss Morris, a private music teacher, replied to the classifieds.

They have devised a "stylish, but casual" set of 1940s jazz standards, including the music of Edith Piaf and Glen Miller, and contemporary artists, such as Amy Winehouse and Michael Buble.

"There's heaps of people who come out for Jazzfest, but I don't think there's anywhere all year round," Miss Gizilis said.

"It's a good venue and it adds to the atmosphere.

It helps people enjoy their night.

Their forthcoming gigs will be their second and third sessions at the eatery after debuting last Friday.

The duo gave a demo CD to Les Alpes marketing manager Serena Mars on the previous Monday, in response to her advertisement for suitable jazz artists to perform at the restaurant.

Miss Mars said she had live music in mind to enhance the Tour de France three-course menu, which offers the culinary delights of a different region every month, as well as for the restaurant's Bastille Day celebration, on July 14.

However, the trial hour-long set by Impulse had been a success with diners and blended with the eatery's own venue aspirations.

Miss Mars said she and Les Alpes co-owner Anne-Marie Guilhaumou, "really like jazz and there are no venues here you can enjoy your meal or wine and listen.

It's all rock, hip-hop and reggae, so I thought it would be a good idea to have people play here."

Miss Mars was in talks with two more jazz and blues acts to play at Les Alpes.

She encouraged more interested artists to contact her at the restaurant.

• Impulse, at Les Alpes, Church St, tonight and tomorrow night, 7 until 9.
