Meditations on the past inform new paintings by two contemporary Queenstown talents in Artbay Gallery this week.

Rachael Errington and David Lee present their joint exhibition titled Days Gone By: Pieces of Kiwiana History in the gallery upstairs in the Mountaineer building, from tomorrow until June 19.

Artbay Gallery owner Pauline Bianchi said artist Errington uses acrylic and oil and mixed media on canvas to capture the essence of pieces of history ''being forgotten'' and left to fall down.

''Rachael's passion for painting, modelling and history is captured in the unique artworks. She creates each piece of weatherboard individually and literally builds the house on to the canvas,'' Ms Bianchi said.

Artist Lee uses acrylic and mixed media on board and, as a sign writer earlier in his career, feels a connection with ''days gone by'' when he sees an old building with hand-painted sign-writing across it.

''It's a skill that has been lost somewhat, through digital imagery, so Dave re-creates parts of old buildings from scratch, and sign-writes some of New Zealand's favourite advertisements from the past 50 years,'' Ms Bianchi said.

The exhibition is about evoking nostalgic feelings, she said.

''Everyone wants new and better things. The paintings are an appreciation of skills that have been replaced by technology.''
