Mr Stephens was on a flight from Bobs Peak about midday when a stunt backfired.

He said a television camera crew was filming at the top of the Skyline Gondola so he thought he would try to attract their attention with some "fancy tricks" to garner exposure for his sponsor, whose logo is on his glider.

"I decided to try and do an infinite tumble but exited the manoeuvre badly and fell past my paraglider. It got completely tangled up so I had to pull my reserve shute and steer myself into a tree on the edge of the cemetery to break my fall," he said.

He was stuck about 2m from the ground and a passer-by called 111.

"I had to call the fire brigade to tell them I was OK and not to come," he said.
