About 40 people turned out to inspect detailed plans for Wanaka's new police station at a public information day on Saturday.

Held at the Lake Wanaka Centre, the station exhibition included display panels illustrating what the planned facility will look like and information boards detailing its many features.

The station is to be built on Ballantyne Rd, below the Department of Conservation (Doc) building.

Police National Headquarters approved the concept design last month and it is hoped the station will open by late next year.

Several police representatives, along with Doc Wanaka area manager Paul Hellebrekers, were on hand to answer the public's questions on Saturday.

Wanaka sub-area commander, Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell, said most of the people who visited the exhibition were neighbours of the site where the station is to be built. Several had sought to clarify where on the site the station would be built, along with inquiries about plantings, fencing and roof lines. Feedback from the public during the session had been very positive.

Those at the open day learned the station will have stand-alone capabilities for up to 48 hours, with features such as potable water and back-up power supply.

The process to transfer the Doc-owned land to New Zealand Police is under way and a resource consent application for the station's construction has been lodged with the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
