Wanaka swimmers will be temporarily out in the cold, as the resort's ageing community pool gets a $345,000 upgrade from the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

QLDC quango Lakes Leisure will close the 18-year-old aquatic facility for two weeks from today to carry out a "much-needed refurbishment".

Lakes Leisure facilities general manager Cam Sheppard said the upgrade would transform the pool in to a more modern and "eco-friendly" facility.

The pool has experienced ongoing problems caused by recent pump failures and condensation issues, which resulted in a three-week closure in April.

Lakes Leisure is responsible for the "continual" improvement and upgrade of services at the pool, Mr Sheppard said.

"Timely" programmed improvements were needed to raise standards at the swimming pool, he said.

"This is a community-owned facility and, as such, we need to make sure its kept in the best possible condition and run in the most economical way," he said.

Improvements include a new heating system powered by a woodchip-fed boiler, an air-conditioner system to reduce condensation, a new coat of of anti-slip water-resistant paint for the floor, and insulation covers for the pool.

The pool improvements are needed to help it last until a new aquatic centre is built in Wanaka.

The QLDC decided to shelve funding for a new pool from its long-term community plan budgets when the credit crunch struck.

Lakes Leisure took management of the pool from the community-backed Wanaka Pool Committee in February last year.

An estimated 2000 visitors used the pool each month, Mr Sheppard said.

The upgrade was about "keeping the doors open at the pool for another 10-15 years" and ensuring it was sustainable to open all year round, he said.

Anyone with Wanaka pool membership cards has free access to Alpine Aqualand in Queenstown during the closure.

The pool is expected to open again on August 30.
