Quake strikes near Haast

An earthquake near Haast with an intensity categorised as "strong'' was felt as far away as Queenstown late this afternoon

The magnitude 4.6 quake, which struck about 4.55pm,  was centred 45km east of the South Westland township at a depth of 5km, Geonet reported.

The New Zealand Fire Service Communications Centre in Christchurch felt the tremor, but has not received calls about damage in the area yet.
