Risk of sewage spill in lake

A risk assessment report determining possible failures which would result in flows of sewage into Lake Wakatipu has recommended Queenstown Lakes District Council spend $285,000 on sewerage systems.

The infrastructure and services committee meeting on Friday accepted a report that a major failure at the Marine Pde wastewater pump station would result in sewage flowing into the lake.

Project manager Lane Vermaas recommended a $35,000 upgrade of a pump drive, which will be made available after the the Leary's Gully water pump station is upgraqded, work due to be completed next month or by August.

A further recommendation is to promote an abandoned AC rising main to a stand-by main, which would "greatly mitigate any catastrophic rupture on the existing rising main with major [sewage] flows in Lake Wakatipu", the report said.

At a minimal cost of $250,00, it was a "worthwhile project".

While the risk of overflow was low, the occurrence would have major environmental impacts.

The committee voted to go ahead with the upgrades, pending alignment with the 10-year plan.
