Rugby portraits exhibition to be presented in Arrowtown

Some of New Zealand's best-known, and unknown, rugby faces will be displayed in life-sized portraits in Arrowtown.

The "Matches" exhibition will be shown from October 29 at the Lakes District Museum.

The images, taken by English photographer David Matches, capture rugby players of all levels immediately after the final whistle has been blown.

Mr Matches' aim was to "capture the essence of New Zealand's game and the men who play it".

For the past six years, he has been visiting New Zealand during the winter months to take the photographs of our rugby players.

The images cover every level of the game - from grassroots to the All Blacks - and Mr Matches has selected players from each game and photographed them at fulltime.

He uses an old 8 x 10 bellows camera and takes only one photograph of each player.

Details of the fixture, the player's name, age, position and fulltime score accompany each photo.

The exhibition is at present showing on Wellington's waterfront and has attracted plenty of attention from both art and rugby lovers.

• The month-long "Matches" exhibition opens at the Lakes District Museum on October 29.
