South Island debut for artist

The first solo exhibition in the South Island by Matakana artist Virginia Leonard opens at Artbay Gallery in Queenstown on Friday.

Gallery director Pauline Bianchi said My Life In Glass was a collection of Leonard's latest signature pieces, which were "recognisable by their outstanding array of floating vivid colours that create different levels of depth".

"Textured overlays and bold brush strokes are all enhanced by the use of a poured reflective acrylic resin, which creates a startling and memorable effect."

Leonard has painted professionally since she graduated with a Master of Fine Art degree from Whitecliffe College of Arts in Auckland in 2000.

She was a 2009 Waiheke Art Awards finalist.

The exhibition will run until Sunday, February 28.
