The Queenstown Bike Festival was ''bigger and better'' than the previous two years, according to organisers who held a debriefing yesterday.

Festival stalwart Geoff Hunt said he was overwhelmed by how Queenstown mountain bikers and national and international visitors had supported the three-year-old event.

He said feedback since the last event finished on Sunday had been positive.

Mr Hunt claimed the festival attracted more than 6000 spectators and competitors throughout the 25 events run over 10 days.

The centrepiece Tour de Wakatipu event on Saturday attracted 600 riders, while the Slopestyle event on Thursday night drew a large crowd.

''Everything has been bigger, way bigger than last year. There has been a lot more work behind the scenes.''

The festival employed 10 full-time staff compared with three last year, most of whom were working 12-hour days, Mr Hunt said.

''The standard in the athletes has also increased significantly.''

Mr Hunt estimated riders and friends spent more than $2.5 million throughout the week in the area. Two new major events were introduced this year, the Remarkables avalanche downhill on Sunday and the enduro race near Coronet Peak on Friday.

The avalanche field was filled quickly due to the Department of Conservation cap of 100 competitors.

However, Mr Hunt is aiming for a 200-rider entry next year.
