Senior Sergeant Mike McRandle, of the commercial vehicle investigation unit, Christchurch, stands near the country's only mobile rolling brake machine, at Frankton yesterday.

It is the first time the machine has been brought to the South Island.

The focus of the unit's visit is on passenger service vehicles, including NZSki buses, taxis, couriers and heavy vehicles.

Snr Sgt McRandle said the machine could test the brake efficiency and balance of heavy vehicles in minutes, detecting any problems.

While there were ''a few issues'' identified in Queenstown yesterday, Snr Sgt McRandle said overall the standard of passenger service vehicles, in particular, had improved hugely over the past few years.

''A lot of company owners are realising the importance around health and safety ... and wanting to do their best to keep the tourist industry happy and safe.''
