Van Asch charges may be withdrawn - lawyer

Police may withdraw a dangerous driving charge against the co-founder of AJ Hackett Bungy Paul Henry Drury Van Asch, his lawyer told the Queenstown District Court yesterday.

Steve Rollo appeared at a status hearing for Van Asch before Judge Stephen Coyle.

Mr Rollo said police alleged Van Asch overtook on yellow lines on a blind corner at up to 169kmh on Malaghans Rd on September 23.

However, he said he had evidence there were no yellow lines on that section of road.

He also had a surveyor's report which said Van Asch had no less than 200m visibility of the road ahead.

"That leaves nothing but speed, so I have asked the police to review the decision to proceed with this case.

"I've been told that decision should be made this week," he said.

Judge Coyle suggested the charge be lowered to careless driving if Van Asch accepted excessive speed.

However, Mr Rollo said his client had not driven carelessly.

A defended hearing was set down for April 22 in the event police do pursue charges.
