One of the longest-serving members of the teaching staff at Queenstown's secondary school has announced his resignation as deputy principal after 20 years in the role.

Due to changes in his personal circumstances and after discussions with his family, Grant Adolph decided to resign from his position as deputy principal of Wakatipu High School at the start of term four this year, a statement from the school said on Friday.

Mr Adolph's last day in school will be January 27. His wife, Jane, also a teacher, will remain at the school.

The board of trustees said they acknowledged the "substantial contribution Grant has made to the Wakatipu High School community and extends to him every good wish for the future.

"The board is pleased that Grant will be available to assist and support new principal Steve Hall and his senior leadership team until he leaves."

Mr Hall told the Queenstown Times on Friday Mr Adolph's 20 years as deputy principal would "definitely leave a big hole". Staff were saddened by his departure when told by Mr Adolph in person yesterday morning, but understood his circumstances, he said.

"Grant made a fantastic contribution to the school and made a difference to a lot of students and staff.

"We will find the right time and the right way to acknowledge and honour his time and farewell him in term four."

Mr Hall said the assistant principal, Pauline Lawrence, would act as deputy principal while he looked at forming a new senior management structure which worked best for the school.
