Wanganui man attacked resident after taking drug

A Wanganui man intended to sell an illegal party drug in Queenstown and took the drug himself and attacked a resident, the Queenstown District Court heard yesterday.

Phillip Mark Holden (23), builder, pleaded guilty to possession for supply of methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and common assault, on September 13.

A woman associate was also charged with possession of MDPV.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Ian Collin, of Queenstown, told Judge Kevin Phillips that Holden, the woman and a third person travelled to Christchurch on September 12, to buy a large amount of the drug.

They then returned to Queenstown.

Sgt Collin said Holden measured MDPV into point bags, and he and the woman consumed some of it themselves.

Holden left the Queenstown residence of his partner about 2.30pm.

He took his clothes off and headed to Frankton marina, Sgt Collin said.

"Once there, he attempted to drag the victim, being a member of the public, into the lake, stating he was attempting to `save him from the radiation'.

"The victim broke free from the defendant in an attempt to get away.

"He was tackled from behind by the defendant and as a result he hit his head on the ground," Sgt Collin said.

The victim suffered a laceration above his left eye, which bled profusely, and bruising and swelling to the eye, Sgt Collin said.

Holden damaged the victim's eyeglasses, a neck chain and a uniform work shirt.

Police were called and found Holden at the scene and it was evident he was under the influence of drugs.

When questioned, Holden admitted he had taken "speed" and inquiries led to the woman's address, Sgt Collin said.

"Police located a large zip-lock bag in the kitchen of the address, which contained a small amount of amphetamine," Sgt Collin said.

Police also located 32 point bags in the woman's bedroom which contained about 4.16g of the drug.

The pair admitted to police they travelled to Christchurch to purchase the product before packaging it into point bags upon their return to Queenstown, Sgt Collin said.

They also admitted they intended to split the drug between themselves and to both sell the drug and use it for personal use, Sgt Collin said.

Judge Phillips convicted and remanded Holden for sentencing to November 29, with his bail to continue.

The woman did not appear in court yesterday and the judge issued a warrant for her arrest.
