Wine buffs will be able to toast the aerial antics at Warbirds Over Wanaka this year with a commemorative bottle produced to promote the popular Easter airshow.

Queenstown liquor company Goodbrands.co.nz has developed a batch of commemorative wines for the 2010 Warbirds airshow.

The wines have been given spiffing titles, such as Spitfire Marlborough Sauvignon, Hurricane Central Otago Pinot Gris and Mustang Central Otago Pinot Noir.

Warbirds Over Wanaka CEO Roger Clark said the launch of commemorative wines added a whole new dimension to the long-standing event, held every two years.

"It's a fantastic commemorative idea that aviation buffs and airshow fans are sure to love," he said.

A dollar from every bottle sold will be donated to the Warbirds Over Wanaka (WOW) Trust.

The wines will also be available from selected liquor outlets before the Easter airshow.

Warbirds organisers will also launch a new rose - of the flower variety - at the airshow this Easter.

The Janice Wallis rose is named after the mother of Warbirds Over Wanaka founder Sir Tim Wallis.

Mrs Wallis was a pioneer rose-growing enthusiast and planted 250 heritage and modern rose varietals in the grounds of Wanaka airport.

The former Central Otago convener of Heritage Roses planted the flowers in dedication to the memory of her brother Neil Blunden, a bomber pilot who was shot down and died.

Mr Blunden was on a flying mission to destroy the German battleship Tirpitz over the Asen Fiord in Norway in 1942.

A percentage of money raised from sales of the Janice Wallis rose will go towards the Upper Clutha branch of the RSA.

The new rose will also become the cornerstone of a planned memorial garden at Wanaka airport to commemorate pilots with links to Wanaka who have died.
