As it is regularly voted one of New Zealand and the world's most romantic spots, a marriage celebrant in Wanaka is pushing for a wedding venue to match the resort's lovely reputation.

Bev Clark thinks a band rotunda at Wanaka Station Park would be a great asset for the historical park and provide a scenic wedding venue.

Mrs Clark wants a "multi-functional" rotunda to be built at the popular site for weddings and has taken her idea to the Wanaka Community Board and council parks chiefs.

Wanaka was voted one of the top 10 romantic locations in the world by Time Life magazine last year, while the resort has also been regularly voted as the most romantic town in New Zealand in annual surveys by condom-maker Durex.

Wanaka had always been a popular spot for weddings and that had increased "dramatically" since Time Life gave the town its "top 10" tick of approval, Mrs Clark said.

A rotunda would "not only enhance" Wanaka Station Park, but also provide shelter from the weather for wedding parties and guests, she said.

Community board member Lyal Cocks said the idea had merit.

He had taken Mrs Clark's proposal to council parks chief Paul Wilson and other community board members.

"Weddings are a big industry for Wanaka. And rotundas can be used for all sorts of things," he said.

However, possible sites, design plans and also funding considerations needed to be decided before any project could proceed, Mr Cocks said.

Mrs Clark said Wanaka Station Park's natural ampitheatre setting made it a logical choice for a multi-purpose rotunda.
