Winter Games NZ staff and volunteers went back to school to brush up on their knowledge of the Wakatipu by taking part in the Queenstown Ambassador Programme at Queenstown Resort College.

Winter Games chief executive Arthur Klapp was among the students for the afternoon.

He said the lessons learnt about the resort's activities, culture and history were beneficial to the team as hosts and also for their personal growth.

Launched in mid-June, the ambassador programme is designed for residents to help them give friendly, positive information about the resort to visitors.

It has input from leading Wakatipu tourism, hospitality and retail operators and the support of the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The affordable programme runs on Fridays from 9am to noon in QRC House and has proved so popular with groups of all ages and backgrounds the next slot is not available until August 23, college business development manager Clodagh Hall says.

Once participants have completed the course they are given an easily recognisable black diamond-shaped badge to wear, which indicates they are available to help visitors and residents alike.

They also have the opportunity to be named ''Ambassador of the Month''.
