Woman charged with making false statement

A British woman who allegedly told police someone had tried to abduct her has been charged with making a false statement.

The 24-year-old woman, who lives in Queenstown, was arrested this afternoon.

Police said she'd complained that a man in a dark green van had grabbed her outside a primary school on Robins Road on Tuesday night at 11.40pm.

Officers issued a witness appeal this morning saying the man had asked for directions before grabbing her shoulder and attempting to pull her into the van.
But this afternoon police issued a second press release.

"[The] British woman has been arrested and charged with making a false statement to police," Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron said.

"The matter relates to an allegation of an assault that was reported to Police.

"Police have no further comment to make as the matter is before the court."

Det Sgt Cameron had said earlier that officers wanted to talk to the woman for a second time before releasing a description of her supposed attacker.

The woman is due to appear in Queenstown District Court on Monday.
