World's largest transport plane may come to Warbirds

One of the world's largest transport planes could make an appearance at Warbirds Over Wanaka in the future, but its size makes it too large to land at the local runway.

Event manager Mandy Deans, inspired by a recent trip to Australian Aerospace show Avalon 2009, hoped that some of the aircraft on display, including F-18 and F-16 fighters, F1-11 and B-1 bombers and the C-17 Globemaster, could make their way to Warbirds next year.

The show-stealer, the C-5 Galaxy, one of the world's largest transport planes, may be able to fly over the event, but was far too large to land.

However, an upgrade to the runway was due as part of a local 30-year plan, but Ms Deans was unable to ascertain exactly when the upgrade would take place.

The F1-11 would also be unable to land, she said.

Ms Deans said a number of top executives from some of the world's leading aerospace companies had shown interest in bringing aircraft and trade stands to the event.

The next Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow takes place from April 2-4 next year.
