Air New Zealand has cracked the million  mark for domestic passengers to Queenstown Airport.

The national carrier flew 163,000 more domestic visitors in and out of the resort last year than in 2015 — an increase of 20%.

Air New Zealand chief revenue officer Cam Wallace said Queenstown’s popularity continued to increase.

"A decade ago we were carrying around 375,000 people a year on our Queenstown routes, so to break the one million barrier is phenomenal and represents a huge economic benefit for the region."

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult said the growth in passenger numbers reflected the resort’s reputation as a top destination for domestic and international travellers, and Air New Zealand had played a key role in that growth.

"The airline’s increased capacity and the extended operating hours at our airport have made it easier for visitors to come here and also made business travel more convenient, which are both important for our local economy."

By comparison, 947,315 domestic and international passengers flew in and out of Dunedin Airport on all airlines, despite it being the busiest 12 months in that airport’s history.
