A vehicle fire at a car dealership in Queenstown may have been started because it had been filled with the wrong fuel.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Senior Station Officer Mike Ide, of Frankton, said the service was called to the forecourt of GWD Motors in Lucas Pl about noon yesterday. The crew found a 2017 petrol-engined Toyota Highlander well ablaze.

''The engine compartment and the front of the car were fully involved in flames. They just started it up and basically it ignited.''

One appliance and crew from the Frankton station attended, he said. The fire was extinguished within about 10 minutes.

GWD branch manager Tim Duggan said it highlighted the importance of using the correct fuel.

''Our guy, he got away from the car straight away and the fire crew were there really quickly. The car was pretty toasted, though.''

He said the rental vehicle had been dropped off earlier this week for repairs.
